The history of the new, modern S5000 category can trace its roots from the gladiators of motorsport from the 1970s and early 1980s – Formula 5000.
Formerly the kings of the race track, costs and a thirst for touring cars meant that a genuine, top level open wheel class in Australia was put on the back burner for many years.
